Team Red defeats Team Black at intrasquad game

Team Red edged Team Black by a score of 6-4 at the 2017 Virden Oil Capitals Garry Cup intrasquad game on Sunday night at Tundra Oil and Gas Place.

Dylan Halliday and Carson Brigdon netted tallies in the first for Team Red as they jumped out to a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. Brayden Pawluk scored for Team Black.

In the second, Drayson Skulmoski was the lone goal scorer, helping Team Black tie the contest at two apiece.

The third period saw Team Red’s Hunter Cloutier score to make it 3-2, however Team Black responded as Brennan Williams was able to tie the contest once again.

Brayden Billaney and Carson Brigdon would give Team Red their first two-goal lead in the third before Colin Cook brought Team Black to within one. Tristen Thompson scored late to ice the contest for Team Red.

“It was a spirited contest for sure,” said head coach and GM Troy Leslie. “It was a little slow starting but I think especially in the third period – with the flurry that went on there – it was an entertaining contest for sure.”

The intrasquad game, he says, is part of the progression for all players who take part.

“You get them in here for camp and the intrasquad game is a step,” he said. “The exhibition games they go into, it’s all a progression in terms of getting comfortable. Obviously the pressure mounts as you go along too.”

The Oil Capitals begin their pre-season Tuesday night in Portage against the Terriers.
