The Caps hit the road yesterday to take on Wayway in hopes of stretching their three-game winning streak to four but came up just shy losing 5-4 in a shootout. The Caps went 1 for 3 (33.3%) on the powerplay and the Wolverines went 1 for 5 (20%) in last night’s match-up.
The Oil Caps came out strong in the first period scoring a powerplay goal at 14:16 – Turner Santin assisted by Kyle Salaway and Tristen Cross. That wouldn’t be all in the first as the Caps capitalized again at 18:18 to go ahead 2-0 – goal was scored by Carter Cowlthorp assisted by Kyle Salaway and Turner Santin. At the end of 20-minutes, the Caps were ahead 2-0 and outshot their opponent 13-9.
The second period seemed to be owned by Waywya as they found their way on the board two times. At 11:45 Wayway found a way past Marc Audet to cut the lead to 2-1. Not wasting much time the Wolverines scored again to tie things up at two. After 40-minutes of play the game was all tied up 2-2 and the shots on goal were 15-2 in favour of Wayway.
Oil Capitals Tyler Kirkup found the back of the net at 3:46 in the third period assisted by Ben Dalke for the Caps to take the lead again 3-2. Wayway would once again tie the game with a goal at 8:36 in the third. The Wolverines would keep rolling and score again at 16:36 to take the lead for the first time in the game. With time running out Tyler Kirkup stepped up again for the Caps putting another one on the board and tying the game 4-4 with 39 seconds left in the game assisted by Sam Schultz and Mack Hardy. After three periods of play, the game was 4-4 and would go to overtime to find a winner. Shots on goal in the third period were 9-9.
Overtime didn’t solve the tie, so the game came down to a shootout.
