Hardy Scores Shootout Game Winner

December 15, 2016

The Oil Capitals squeaked by the Neepawa Natives Wedensday, December 14 at the MJHL Showcase in a 3-2 shootout victory.   Virden Oil Capitals assistant coach Carter Duffin said, “It was our second game in two days and we were still able to make a strong push the second half of the game, adding a power play goal and a later goal in the third to tie it. McVeigh made some key stops in overtime and the shootout to give us the chance to give us the goals we needed to win.”

The Natives opened up the scoring in the first period with a goal from Justin Metcalf at 14:15 assisted by Ashton Anderson and Nick Schultze. The Oil Capitals had their opportunites, but couldn’t put one past Neepawa Natives goaltender, Tyler Gutenberg. After 20 minutes the Caps trailed by one and the shots on goal were 11-10 for the Capitals.

The second period the Capitals went on a power play at 12:58 and it didn’t take long for Caps power play to capitalize. Ben Dalke put one past Gutenberg at 13:30 assisted by Kirklan Lycar and the game was all tied up. At the end of two periods the game was tied 1-1 and shots on goal were 13-6, Capitals.

The Natives took the lead back early in the third period with a goal from Nolan Richards at 0.17 seconds assisted by Reigan Buchanan.  The Oil Capitals answered back to tie the game 2-2 late in the third with a goal from Tristen Cross assisted by Mack Hardy. At the end of three periods of play the game was tied 2-2 and shots on goal were 7-3.  The game went to overtime, but nothing was resolved there and had to go to a shootout to find a winner.
