Troy Leslie, head coach and GM of the Virden Oil Capitals, was named an assistant coach for the 18-and-under squad at the upcoming SJHL/MJHL Player Showcase.
Leslie joins a staff led by Paul Dyck (head coach) and athletic therapist Jeff Eidse of the Steinbach Pistons.
“It’s a real good opportunity to be around some of the best players in our league and in the SJHL as well,” Leslie said. “I look forward to the opportunity to work with Paul (Dyck).”
Kim Davis, MJHL commissioner, says the purpose of the event is to highlight the players with another player showcase event so that scouts can get a first-hand look at players in a highly competitive environment.
“The league coaches as a group decided in June that the head coaches for this event should be appointed based on seniority and interest in the opportunity,” Davis said in a release. “The same approach was taken when selecting the assistant coaches for the event. This is the first event of this nature and it’s expected that it will be done annually in Saskatchewan.”
The event is scheduled to take place Jan. 15-16, 2018 at Regina’s Co-operators Centre.
There are two 20-and-under MJHL teams that will be taking part in the event as well. The first squad is led by Doug Hedley of the OCN Blizzard and includes Dustin Howden (Neepawa) as an assistant coach and Devin Atkin of Dauphin who will be the athletic therapist.
The second MJHL 20-and-under squad will be coached by Ken Pearson of Winkler and he’ll be joined by assistant Steve Mullin (Winkler) and athletic therapist Mike Twardoski (Wayway).
The teams will play a total of two games over the two-day event.
Congratulations to coach Leslie!
