MARCH RECAP & GAME HIGHLIGHTS

In the month of March, the Virden Oil Capitals played their final 6 regular season games. Three of their games were against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines, one was against the Dauphin Kings and two were against the OCN Blizzard. See game highlights below.

Thursday, March 3rd, 2022 

Virden opened the scoring at 1:11 with Dylan Halliday scoring his 25th goal of the season assisted by Buydens and Huminuk. Colten Miller furthered the Oil Caps lead at 7:43 for his 7th of the season and Brody Wilson scored later on in the period unassisted putting the Oil Caps up by 3 ending the first 3-0!

Game Highlights

During the second, the Wolverines scored back-to-back goals towards the end of the period. Goals scored by Andrew Boucher and Reagan Rabbit leaving the Oil Caps up by just 1 heading into the 3rd.

The third started off 16 seconds in with Lonan Bulger scoring his 11th of the season to tie up the game.

Colin Cook assisted by Colten Miller scored at 4:39 once again taking the lead, however the lead wasn’t enough to take the win by the end of the 3rd.

The 60 minutes of regular time and overtime was not enough time for these two teams sending the game into a shootout.

During the shootout Boston Bird was denied by Oil Caps goaltender Bailey Monteith followed by Braden Fischer with the first goal of the shootout. Joey Moffatt was another no goal and Dylan Halliday scored the second and game winning goal of the shootout!

Virden Oil Capitals won 5-4.

Friday, March 4th, 2022

Game Highlights

After a slow start to the game, Wayway’s Caleb Petrie scored at 12:56 assisted by Reagan Rabbit and Andrew Boucher. Caleb with the only goal in the first period and his 16th of the season.

Virden started the scoring off in the second period with Nathan Driver at 5:41 for his 28th of the season assisted by Braden Fischer tying the game up 1-1.

The Waywayseecappo Wolverines Spencer Paplawski scored 2 minutes later followed by Virden’s Branden Huminuk ending the second in a tie 2-2.

The third period was all Wayway with 3 goals scored ending the game 5-2 for Wayway.

Sunday, March 6th, 2022 VS Waywayseecapppo Wolverines

Game Highlights

The Virden Oil Capitals have won 1 game and lost 1 game in the month of March so far.

Wayway’s Joey Moffatt started off the scoring at 3:19 for his 8th of the season. 10 minutes Rands scored his 8th of the season with assists from Thoendel and Fischer. It was a tied game by the end of the first period.

Braden Fischer scored 54 seconds into the second giving the Oil Caps the lead followed by Carson Buydens for his 22nd of the season and first of the night on a powerplay.

The scoring didn’t stop there for the second period. Wayways Owen Wheatley scored at 7:22 also on a powerplay.

Carson Buydens went in for his second of the night at 10:19 assisted by Dylan Halliday. The second period ended 4- 2 for Virden.

In the final period at 11:21 Virden’s Carson Buydens went in and scored his 3rd of the night and 24th of the season! Buydens with the Hat Trick at 11:21 was assisted by Branden Huminuk.

Virden held the 3-goal lead and towards the end of the period Carson Buydens scored his 4th goal of the night! 5 minutes left and Buydens scored his 25th of the season on an empty net!

Final Score 6-2 for the Oil Caps!

Tuesday, March 8th, 2022 – VS Dauphin Kings

Brody Wilson received the Black & Gold Top Defensive Award, Colin Cook reveivedthe Sunrise Most Community Minded Award, David Bielik received the Alexandra Hotel Most Improved Award, and Dylan Halliday and Tyler Thoendel both received the Wallace District & Fire department Unsung Hero Award

Game Highlights

The game kicked off with a goal from Tyler Thoendel to give the Oil Caps the 1-0 lead. The Kings tied it up at 12:14 with Logan Calder. Evan Groening scored a minute later with an assist from Colin Cook followed by Braden Fischer for his 31st of the season and the Oil Caps 3rd of the game.

With a minute left in the first period Dauphins Cordell Coleman scored tying up the game heading into the second.

The second period started off with a goal by Layton Veitch 3 minutes in giving the Oil Caps a 1 goal lead. However, the Kings put up 2 goals before the end of the second.

Heading into the third period we saw an early goal by Oil Cap Carson Buydens to make the score 5-4 Caps. Later in the period Virden scored another to make the score 6-4; Branden Huminuk. Towards the end of the period the Kings scored and took back a goal before the end of the game to leave the final score at 6-5 Virden.

Thursday, March 10th, 2022 

Carson Buydens received the Twin Valley Coop 3 Stars Award, Logan Rands received the Cross Plumbing and Heating Top Defensive Award, Trevor Hunt received the CIBC Most Sportmanlike Player Award AND the Fountain Tire Fan Choice Award.

Game Highlights

In Thursday night’s game VS the OCN Blizzard the Oil Capitals started the game off with a single goal unassisted by Braden Fischer. Fischers 32nd goal of the season at 5:54 in the first.

During the second period the Blizzard scored 2 quick back-to-back goals giving them the leave by 1. Towards the end of the period Nathan McInnis scored the Oil Caps 2nd of the night to tie up the game.

In the third, Oil Cap Brody Wilson scored at 3:14 with an assist from Parker Johnson putting the Oil Caps in the lead which wasn’t held long with Drayden Kurbatoff scoring the Kings 3rd goal of night.

The last half of the third period saw 3 Oil Cap goals to take a 6-3 win over the OCN Blizzard. Parker Johnson at 14:06, Brody Wilson for his second of the night at 14:33 and Nathan Driver at 17:31.

Friday, March 11th, 2022 

Carson Buydens received the Silverline Oilfield Services Rookie of the Year Award, Braden Fischer received the McNeill Harasymchuk McConnell Top Scorer Award, Colten Miller received the Gardewine Hardest Working Player Award, and Logan Rands and Braden Fischer both received the Stillwater Adventures Most Valuable Player Award!

Game Highlights

The Virden Oil Capitals defeated the OCN Blizzard in OT by a score of 4-3 to win the back-to-back games at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.

Virden would open the scoring 9 minutes and 41 seconds in on a goal by Braden Fischer assisted by Tyler Thoendel and Nathan Driver, followed by Riley Zimmerman scoring the Blizzards first goal of the night. Virden then ran into a penalty allowing the Blizzard to break the tie and take the lead 2-1.

After 20 minutes of play the Oil Caps were down 2-1.

In the 2nd period the Blizzard would score only 1 goal while the Oil Caps would score 2 goals. Goals scored by Parker Johnson at 9:23 and Carson Buydens at 14:04 tying up the game to head into the final period.

The third period had no goals scored sending the game into overtime where Oil Cap David Bielik scored the 4th, winning goal for the Caps.

The Oil Caps won in OT 4-3 ending regular season games heading into playoffs.
