The Virden Oil Capitals faced another tough test Tuesday night, falling 6-3 to the Niverville Nighthawks at the Niverville CRRC in Game 3 of the third-round playoff series.
With the win, Niverville now holds a 3-0 series lead, putting the Oil Caps in a must win situation heading into Thursday night.
The opening period was fast-paced and full of offense. Niverville struck first as Vigfusson opened the scoring at 4:55, followed by Panzer to quickly put the Oil Caps down 2-0. Virden responded midway through the period when Ulmer scored, with assists from Deschamps and Siemens. The Nighthawks answered again on the power play before the Oil Caps pushed back once more. Goertzen scored at 13:25, and Osiowy followed at 17:37, briefly tying the game at 3-3 heading into the intermission.
Niverville regained the lead when Boles scored shorthanded, giving the Nighthawks a 4-3 advantage. Despite multiple power play opportunities, the Oil Caps were unable to capitalize, and Niverville carried the lead into the third.
In the third period, the Nighthawks extended their lead when Scott scored at 6:15, adding insurance for the home side. Virden pressed to get back into the game but was unable to break through against goaltender Dubinsky, who made several key saves down the stretch. Niverville sealed the win with an empty-net goal from Mears at 16:52, securing the 6-3 victory.
Special teams played a major role in the outcome. Virden went 0-for-8 on the power play, while Niverville capitalized on key opportunities, including a shorthanded goal that shifted momentum in the second period.
Goaltender Burdeny made 15 saves on 21 shots, while the Oil Capitals generated 42 shots but were limited to just three goals. Dubinsky was once again a difference-maker for Niverville, stopping 39 of 42 shots.
With the loss, the Oil Caps now trail the series 3-0 and face elimination heading into Game 4 Thursday night at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.
