Oil Capitals and Head Coach/General Manager Agree to 4 Year Contract Extension

The Virden Oil Capitals are excited to announce that the team and Head Coach/General Manager, Tyson Ramsey, have agreed to a four-year contract extension, which runs until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.

Tyson has been with the Oil Capitals organization since the 2018/19 Season, where he started as an Assistant Coach. He became the Head Coach and General Manager for the 2019/20 Season.

Since Ramsey has been Head Coach & GM for the Virden Oil Capitals, he was named a finalist for CJHL Coach of the year after starting 9-0-1 in the Covid shortened season of 2020-2021.  He currently holds a record of 70-43-10 since his time at the helm.

Highlights: Brayden Fischer, brought in by trade last season, MJHL MVP and CJHL MVP Finalist as well as drafting Carson Buydens in 2019, who was named MJHL Rookie of the Year – CJHL Rookie of the Year Finalist and has committed to Princeton NCAA. During the 2021/22 Season, the Virden Oil Capitals had 20 Manitoba players on roster, 12 of which were from the Westman area. Off ice, he was been instrumental in implementing the Virden Oil Capitals Highway 50/50 Lotto and the Virden Oil Capitals Hockey School.

Ramsey had this to say:

“First, I would like to thank the Oil Capitals board of directors, the hockey and business operations staff, as well as the community of Virden for the last 3 seasons.  Everyone has been so welcoming to me and my family and we are very proud to call Virden home.  I am extremely excited today to be signing a contract extension to be the GM and Head Coach of the Virden Oil Capitals for another 4 seasons.  I feel like we have taken some great strides forward on and off the ice in the last few seasons in spite of battling through a worldwide pandemic that was devastating to so many.  The community of Virden is full of hard working people and businesses and they deserve to have a local team that has the same core values.  Our loyal season ticket holders and business partners, along with the community of Virden and the surrounding area are ready and deserving of a Manitoba Junior Hockey League Championship and we will continue to work towards this ultimate goal. I am truly honored and excited to be able to continue to build on what we have started here and put together a hockey club that can make that happen!”

Craig Davidson, Chairman, Virden Oil Capitals Board of Directors:

“Tyson has done a phenomenal job from his first day here really leading this team.  He has really taken over the GM and Head Coaching duties with a strong work ethic, strong values, and creating a structure that will give the team a chance to win a championship year after year.  Tyson has been instrumental in continuing and creating a culture here, both on and off the ice, that players want to come here and be a part of the community to play hockey.  Tyson and his family have really immersed themselves in the community and love calling Virden home.  We, the Virden Oil Capitals Board of Directors, are elated that we have Tyson here for the long term.”
