The Virden Oil Capitals have made a trio of roster moves ahead of their season opener this Friday in Selkirk.
In the first move, the Oil Capitals are excited to have added 2002 F Hunter Andrew of the Southwest Cougars. Andrew who hails from Virden is a gritty left winger who plays with speed and skill. He played the last 2 seasons with the Southwest Cougars in the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League. Last season Andrew had 49 pts (16g, 33a) in 44 regular season games for the Cougars and added another 6 pts in 7 playoff games. Hunter’s older brother Tanner also suits up for the Oil Caps.
Oil Caps Head Coach and GM Tyson Ramsey was excited to add a player like Andrew to the lineup, “In Hunter we get a little bit of everything. He competes hard and brings heaviness and grit to our lineup. Hunter is a great skater who has an ability to create offensively. We are very excited to add Hunter to our roster and watch him develop into the player we think he can become.”
In a second move the Oil Capitals have traded 2001 D Patrick Comeau to the Selkirk Steelers in exchange for 2003 D Sam Mitani of Winnipeg and a conditional 6th round pick in the 2020 bantam draft. Mitani played last season with the U17 Winnipeg Monarchs and in 36 games put up 5 goals and 13 assists.
The Oil Caps weren’t done there as they have also added 2000 F Riker Franzcak from the Hunboldt Broncos of the SJHL. Franczak hails from Calgary, AB and put up 5 goals and 6 assists in 34 games last season with the Broncos.
Tyson Ramsey spoke highly of both aquistitions, “We are real happy to add Mitani to our list and insert Franczak into our lineup. Mitani is a highly skilled right handed defenseman who thinks the game well and has tremendous upside. In Riker we get an experienced guy who competes hard and plays the game the right way. We are excited to get him into our lineup this weekend.”
The Oil Caps begin the 2019/2020 regular season this Friday in Selkirk against the Steelers and then return home to Tundra Oil & Gas place on Saturday for the Valleyview Co-op Home Opener against the same Steeler team. Game time for both games is 7:30.
