Oil Caps Shut Out Neepawa

October 2

Winnipeg, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals opened the 2015 Old Dutch MJHL Showcase in convincing fashion with a 5-0 win over the Neepawa Natives on Friday afternoon.

Five different players found the back of the net on an afternoon that also saw Sean Kuehn post a 16 save shutout.

The Oil Caps opened the scoring 9 minutes in when Kyle Salaway jammed home his first MJHL goal on a great setup from Schram and Nolan Ross.

Less than a minute later Tyler Kirkup potted his first career goal on a nifty tic tac toe play set up by Mack Hardy and Tanner Lewis.

With ten seconds left in the opening frame, the Oil Caps added a powerplay marker as Tristen Cross snuck to the back door and got a gift from Devan Schram for an easy tap in.

In the 2nd, Mack Hardy made it 4-0 after driving hard to the net. Tanner Lewis set up the goal for his 3rd assist of the night.

For added insurance Dylan Thiessen, fresh off the IR scored an absolute beauty moments later to make it 5-0.

That would spell the end of the night for Natives goalie Jeremy Link who allowed 5 goals on 22 shots.

Neither team would find the back of the net in the third but there was a handful of fiery scrums. The Caps finished the game with just 4 defensemen due to game misconducts.

The Oil Caps will take on the Portage Terriers in the 2nd game of the MJHL Showcase on Saturday afternoon.

Game time at the MTS IcePlex is 1:00.
