Oil Caps Start 2016 With a Loss

January 5

Virden, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals threw everything but the kitchen sink at OCN goalie Emelim Boily on Tuesday night but couldn’t convert when it mattered, falling 3-2 to the Blizzard in The Pas.

The Oil Caps fired 55 shots on goal but went 0/4 on the power play and failed to capitalize on at least a half dozen quality scoring opportunities.

Virden dominated the first period, outshooting the Blizzard 16-1 but both teams would head to the room without a goal.

Early in the 2nd, Carter Cowlthorp took a pair of penalties on the same shift and OCN was quick to convert.

Logan Harland and Lantz Hiebert scored just a minute apart to give OCN a 2-0 lead.

Davis Ross and Tanner Lewis would find the twine early in the third to tie the game up at two.

In a fast paced game that saw a ton of speed and end to end action, it was Logan Harland who would play the hero with less than 3 minutes to go sniping his 2nd of the night past Sean Kuehn to give the Blizz the one goal lead.

The OiL Caps pulled their goalie for the extra pressure late but could not beat the goaltender.

Sean Kuehn turned aside 22 shots in the losing effort, while Boily posted a 1st star effort with 53 saves.

The Oil Caps will look to regroup this weekend when they welcome the Winkler Flyers.

Game time on Saturday is 7:30!
