Oil Caps Unveil New Award

September 14

Virden, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals are extremely proud to announce the new Wallace District Fire Department ”Unsung Hero Award.”

The WDFD have donated an older model fire helmet which will be handed out in the dressing room to the player who best fits the definition of “Unsung Hero” each and every night.

Definition: a person who makes a substantive yet unrecognized contribution; a person whose bravery is often unknown or unacknowledged

“Its one of those things you see in dressing rooms all over hockey. From hardhats to army helmets, a lot of teams have this type of award that is voted on by the guys in the room” said Marketing Manager Branden Crowe.

“Its a pride thing… a team doesn’t succeed without players willing to sacrifice themselves for the betterment of the club, similar to the ideals of a fire department”

The player who earns the helmet the most during the 2015/2016 season will receive the first ever WDFD Unsung Hero Trophy at the annual Oil Caps Awards Banquet to be held in March.

The new award coincides with the announcement of the first ever “Service Workers Appreciation Night” to be held on Tuesday November 10th vs Selkirk.

Members of the WDFD, Virden EMS and RCMP will be honoured prior to the game for their tireless efforts throughout the year.

“The emergency services workers do a tremendous job of keeping the community of Virden and surrounding area safe” Crowe added.

“For us to pay tribute to them and introduce them to the community and fans and allow them to say thanks is something we are really looking forward to.”

Service Workers Appreciation Night is Tuesday November 10th vs Selkirk.
