Oil Caps Strike First in Round 2 with 6-4 Road Win Over Pistons

The Virden Oil Capitals opened the second round of the playoffs in impressive fashion Friday night in Steinbach, skating to a 6-4 victory over the Steinbach Pistons at the Southeast Event Centre in Game 1.

Virden came out flying and wasted little time setting the tone offensively. Bryant opened the scoring at 8:16 of the first period, finishing a play from Lewko to give the Caps an early lead. Just over a minute later, Bryant struck again, this time with assists from Schaefer and Goertzen, putting Virden up 2-0. The Caps kept pressing, and Siemens added another, finishing a setup from Osiowy to make it 3-0.

Steinbach responded late in the opening frame when Hoffman scored, but Virden still carried a strong 3-1 lead into the intermission.

The Pistons pushed back in the middle frame, cutting into the lead early on the power play as Noad scored at 7:24. Steinbach then pulled even closer when Kostiuk scored shorthanded shortly after, making it a one-goal game.

Just 40 seconds later, Drake restored the two-goal cushion with a power-play marker with assists from Osiowy and Siemens, helping Virden regain control heading into the third.

Virden continued to answer every challenge in the final period. At 7:44, Schaefer extended the lead to 5-3, capitalizing on a play set up by Goertzen. Later in the period, Hoilett added a key insurance goal on the power play, with Bryant and Schaefer picking up the assists.

Steinbach managed one more late goal from Doyle at 18:34, but the Oil Caps shut the door the rest of the way to secure the road victory.

The offensive spotlight belonged to Bryant, who scored twice and added an assist in a dominant Game 1 performance. Virden also got goals from Siemens, Drake, Schaefer, and Hoilett, while Osiowy and Schaefer each chipped in multiple points in a balanced team effort.

Goaltender Burdeny was sharp once again, stopping 24 of 28 shots to earn the win, while the Oil Capitals generated heavy pressure all night, outshooting Steinbach 41-28.

Now with Game 1 in hand, Virden heads into the next matchup with momentum and a chance to build an early grip on the series.
