Oil Caps Nathan Schaefer, Braxton Burdeny, and Bryan Laing have all been named MJHL players of the month for January 2026.
Nathan Schaefer – Safe Work Manitoba Defenseman of the Month
Schaefer was one of the MJHL’s most productive defensemen through the opening month of 2026, driving the offense from the blue line and helping propel the Oil Caps to the top of the MGEU West Division. The dynamic blueliner delivered his standout performance of the season against the Blizzard, recording five assists, and now ranks fifth among all MJHL defensemen in scoring.
Braxton Burdeny – McMunn & Yates Goaltender of the Month
It was an outstanding month for the veteran netminder, who delivered a flawless 7–0 record across seven starts, highlighted by two shutout performances. Over that stretch, Burdeny was locked in between the pipes, stopping 174 of 185 shots and consistently giving his team a chance to win every night.
His strong play has him ranked among the MJHL’s elite in all major goaltending categories, sitting second in wins with 17, fourth in save percentage at .914, fourth in goals-against average with a 2.51 mark, and leading the league with four shutouts.
Bryan Laing – Chevrolet Rookie of the Month
The Oil Caps strong month was further highlighted by the play of rookie forward Bryan Laing, who made the most of his opportunities while centering the fourth line. Laing produced at a point-per-game pace in January, recording five goals and five assists, while providing reliable two-way play and energy in a depth role.
His steady contributions helped propel Virden to an impressive 10-0-1 record during the month, allowing the Oil Caps to strengthen their hold atop the MGEU West Division and continue building separation from the rest of the pack.
Congratulations Nathan, Braxton, and Bryan!
