Third Period Explosion, Leads Caps to Win

March 11

Virden, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals took a 1-0 series lead over the Winnipeg Blues in Game #1 of the MJHL Quarter-Finals with a 4-3 win over the Winnipeg Blues Friday night!

The Caps used three goals in the first 4:20 of the third period to lift them to a game one victory!

Colton Spicer, Zach Whitecloud and Carter Cowlthorp brought the crowd of 1,089+ out of their seats and finally found the offense they struggled to find in the opening 40 minutes.

The Blues opened the scoring on the power play as Taeron Lewis netted his first of the post-season.

The Blues took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd as Tyler Edwards fired a seeing eye shot from the point to beat Sean Kuehn.

Before the period came to an end, Ben Dalke found the loose puck on the power play to cut the lead to one!

Thats when the Caps offense found their stride, giving them a 4-2 lead.

Mitch Hansen would give the Blues some life again late in the third but it wasn’t enough as the Caps hang on for the victory and draw first blood in the series.

Sean Kuehn made 32 saves for the win while Scott Parsons made 19 in the Blues net.

Game two of the series shifts to Winnipeg on Sunday.

Game time at the MTS Ice Plex is 7:00.
