Selkirk, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals snapped a mini three game losing skid on Friday night in Selkirk.
Tyler Kirkup led the way for Virden scoring a pair of goals on route to a 5-3 road win.
It was a youthful night for the Oil Caps on the scoresheet as Derek and Tristen Cross also found the back of the net. For Derek, it would go in the books as his first MJHL goal.
Virden would open the scoring midway through the opening period on the power play as Mack Hardy took a slick pass from Jake Dudar and snapped home his 5th of the year into an open cage.
Just five minutes later, after Kyle Salaway hit the cross bar, Kirkup would notch his first of the night. Tanner Lewis and Derek Cross would pick up assists.
It was more of the same in the 2nd period as the Oil Caps would add two more to go up 4-0.
First it was Derek Cross snapping a point shot glove side on Evan Robert to make it 3-0. That was followed by Tyler Kirkup’s 2nd of the night on a great feed from Kyle Salaway.
The Steelers showed some life in the third scoring early on the power play. Dexter Kucek shot up the left side on a breakout and sent a rocket shot over the blocker of Sean Kuehn. That cut the lead to 4-1.
Just moments later Tristen Cross would halt any momentum as he found the back of the net on a point shot to regain the 4 goal lead.
The Steelers would add a couple more but it was as close as they would get.
Sean Kuehn made 24 saves for the win while Evan Robert and Cody Murray combined to make just 22 saves.
The two clubs will turn around and do it all again tonight at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.
