Caps Offense Finds Another Gear

October 18

Virden, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals offense exploded for 11 goals in two games this weekend, capped off with a 5-2 win over the Steinbach Pistons on Sunday afternoon.

Looking to win their 3rd straight, the Oil Caps didn’t get the start they wanted as the Pistons opened the scoring just 1:05 into the game.

It was a quick response however, as Devan Schram finally found the back of the net for his first of the year to tie things up at one.

Before the first period would come to a close, Dylan Cusmano would jam home his first career MJHL goal giving the Caps a 2-1 lead at the break.

The Oil Caps would take a 3-1 lead off the stick of Ben Dalke, who notched his third goal in two games.

From that point on it was a story of special teams. Virden found themselves shorthanded seven times in the middle frame.

However, their penalty kill held the Pistons to just one goal in that span.
After forty minutes, the Oil Caps lead 3-2.

The parade to the penalty box continued in the 3rd as Virden was assessed 6 more minor penalties.

Overall, the Pistons were only able to convert on one of the eleven official power play chances.

Cody Durdle added to his team lead in scoring when he poked home juicy rebound to add some insurance for the Caps who lead 4-2 at that point.

Dylan Thiessen would seal the deal with his 2nd of the year as he pulled out his pitching wedge and lobbed a 180 foot moon shot into the empty net!

Sean Kuehn made 28 saves for the win and earned 1st star honours in the process, while Jeremy Wik made 21 saves in the losing effort.

The Oil Caps will take the week off before embarking on a 3 in 3 weekend starting Friday in Portage.
