McVeigh commits to Stevenson University

Riley McVeigh will be heading south of the border to attend Stevenson University in the fall where he’ll join the Mustangs, a Division III hockey program, located just outside of Baltimore, Maryland.

“I thought it would be a really good opportunity pursuing both hockey and education at the same time,” said the Calgary product who spent the past two seasons between the pipes for the Virden Oil Capitals. “I think it was the right step to take my hockey and schooling to the next level.”

McVeigh, 20, earned a spot on the Oil Caps 50-man list after a stellar performance in net at the 2016 Oil Caps Spring Camp. After a solid first year in Virden, McVeigh shined even brighter this past season, helping lead the club to an MJHL championship final appearance.

McVeigh wanted to thank Oil Caps management and the coaching staff for all they’ve done for him the past two seasons.

“Being in Virden was the best two years of my life. There are a lot of good things that I’m taking away – a great small town with a lot of support – so I want to thank everybody in Virden for making me feel at home.”

He also wanted to thank his billets, Heiko and Candace Bueche, for “being the best billets that anybody could ask for and making me feel at home every single day.”

He says having the opportunity to play hockey in a great community like Virden is something he’ll never forget.

“I’ll always call Virden home for the rest of my life,” he concluded.

The Oil Caps would like to thank Riley for his time in Virden and wish him all the best moving forward!
