Oil Caps pick up big road win over Terriers

The Virden Oil Capitals came away with a big road victory on Wednesday night in Portage, defeating the Terriers by a score of 4-1.

After a disappointing overtime loss against Swan Valley in Virden on Tuesday night, the Oil Capitals responded in a big way in Portage, opening up a two-goal lead in the first period on tallies by Ben Dalke (10th of the season) and Dylan Thiessen (10th of the year) at the 2:51 and 3:27 marks respectively.

The Terriers responded as Chase Brakel netted his 13th goal of the season at the 15:20 mark of the second to make it 2-1 Oil Caps after 40 minutes of play.

The Oil Caps were able to keep the Terriers at bay in the third, eventually scoring two empty netters late as Graeme Hore’s ninth of the season at 17:49 and Kyle Salaway’s 15th at the 18:10 mark put the game away.

Riley McVeigh stood tall in net for Virden, allowing only one shot to get behind him as the Calgary product turned aside 22 shots to pick up his 13th win of the season.

Brendan Benoit and Lasse Petersen combined to take the loss between the pipes for Portage.

With the win, the Oil Caps improved to 18-9-1-0 on the season.

Next up for the Oil Caps: Friday night in Dauphin against the Kings. Game time: 7:30 p.m.
