Powerplay Kicks Into High Gear

September 29

Virden, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals put on a show for the 848 in attendance at Tundra Oil & Gas Place on Tuesday night picking up their first win of the season 5-4 over Swan Valley.

It was a tough start for the Caps who fell behind 3-0 before the 5 minute mark of the 2nd period.

Swan got their goals quick out of the gate from Michael Fortin, Trevor Mann and Josh Trip and looked to be in complete control of the hockey game.

Cue the comeback.

Cody Durdle snapped home his first of the season on the power play to give the Caps some life. Tanner Lewis followed up with a nice finish on a pass from Tyler Kirkup to cut the lead to 1.

Before the period ended, Swan would notch a buzzer beater with less than one second left on the clock to regain the 2 goal lead.

Whatever was said in the dressing room following the 2nd period, worked!

The Caps stormed out with three goals in nine minutes lead by a pair of PP goals (Durdle, Dudar).

Cole Oliver would play the hero scoring the eventual game winner before the midway point of the third to give the Caps their first lead of the game.

It was all Sean Kuehn from there as the Texas native kicked aside all six 3rd period shots to hang on for the win. Kuehn made 14 saves on the evening.

Stamps goalie Zach DeGraves was solid at the other end making 33 saves in the loss.

The Oil Caps were able to finally shake the monkey loose as their power play went 3/7 on the night.

Next up is the MJHL Showcase this weekend. The Caps play the Neepawa Natives on Friday at 3:00, and Portage on Saturday at 1:00.

Both games can be heard on www.gametimeradio.ca with Branden Crowe and Ryan Potter.
