Caps Earn 5-2 Win on Home Ice

Virden, MB –  It was a big night in Oil Country as the Capitals got back in the W column tonight after beating Wayway 5-2 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Virden Oil Capitals Captain, Mack Hardy was awarded the Franchise Leader in most games played as an Oil Capital, 2013-2017. As of January 29th, he has played 243 games in an Oil Caps jersey, taking over from Devan Schram who was recognized with most games played last year with 236. 

Wayway got on the board early with a short handed goal at 2:56 from Cody Durdle assisted by Landyn Cockrane and Dylan Tanner, 1-0. The Caps answered back with a goal from Carter Cowlthorp at 6:07 assisted by Kyle Salaway and Tyler Kirkup, 1-1. The Caps Kyle Salaway put one away at 15:18 to take the lead 2-1 assisted by Carter Cowlthorp and Tyler Kirkup. At the end of the first period, the Caps were in the lead 2-1 and shots on goal were 18-15 for the Capitals. 

The second period was all Capitals with a goal at 7:31 from Dylan Thiessen assisted by Marco Creta and Jeran Knorr, 3-1. The Caps stretched the lead to 4-1 with a goal from Captain, Mack Hardy assisted by Jacob Cronin and Sam Schultz. At the end of 40 minutes of play, the Caps were leading 4-1 and the shots on goal were 21-10 in favour of the Caps. 

Wayway got on the board to narrow the lead to 4-2 at 9:45 with a goal from Mack McPhee assisted by Adam Withers and Derek Wood. The Caps put one more away at 11:14 with a goal from Kirklan Lycar assisted by Mack Hardy and Ben Dalke. The final score was 5-2 and final shots on goal were 47-40. 

The Caps earned all 3 stars; third star- Tyler Kirkup, Second star – Carter Cowlthorp, and first star – Mack Hardy. The Redferns Hardest Worker of the game was Riley McVeigh. 

The Caps next action is Friday, Feb 3 on the road against Selkirk Steelers – 7:30 pm puck drop. The Caps next home action is Saturday, Feb 4 against Wayway – puck drop 7:30 pm.
