Oil Capitals Take Down First Place Pistons

Feb. 17, 2017 Virden, MB – The Virden Oil Capitals take down the first place, Steinbach Pistons 4-2 on home ice.  Head Coach, Troy Leslie said, " It was nice to get a solid effort from everyone tonight. Our compete level and energy was really good, it was a win our team needed."  The first period was a quiet one with neither team able to put one on the board. The Caps had their chances, outshooting the Pistons 21-11 in the first. The Caps opened up the scoring at 6:49 in the second with a power-play goal from assistant captain, Carter Cowlthorp assisted by Kyle Salaway. The Pistons answered back at 14:00 with a goal from Braden Purtill assisted by Joseph Leonidas and Landon Plett, 1-1. At the end of the second period, the Caps and Pistons were tied 1-1. The shots on goal were 16-12 for the Caps.  Carter Cowlthorp put away a short-handed goal at 6:56 in the third period assisted by Dylan Thiessen to take the lead, 2-1. It didn't take long for the Pistons to answer back with a goal at 8:01 on the power play scored by William Koop assisted by Ryan Carlson and Tyler Anderson, 2-2. The Caps took the lead 3-2 at 16:33 with a goal from Jesse Korytko for his third of the season assisted by Jordan Thomson. Seconds later Kolten Kanaski would stretch the lead to two assisted by Ben Dalke and Carter Cowlthorp, 4-2. That would be enough for the Caps to take the game 4-2. Caps Take Down Neepawa

October 22, 2016 Virden, MB – It was Hockey Night in Oil Country as the Caps took on the Neepawa Natives at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. The Caps got the outcome they were looking for, beating Neepawa 3-1.  The Caps got on the board early in the first with a powerplay goal at 5:32 – scored by Jeran Knorr assisted by Mack Hardy and Tyler Kirkup.  It didn’t take long for the Caps to score their second of the game getting on the board again at 7:35 – powerplay goal was scored by Kyle Salaway assisted by Turner Santin and Sam Schultz. After the first period of play, the Caps were in the lead 2-0.  The second period was a quiet one with neither team able to find the back of the net. After 40-minutes of play, the Caps were in the lead 2-0.  The Natives scored their first goal of the game at 14:34 in the third period. The Natives pulled their goalie in the last minute of play and the Caps were able to score an empty net goal to win the game 3-1. The goal was scored by Jeran Knorr, getting his second of the game assisted by Mack Hardy and Carter Cowlthorp.  The final score was 3-1, Capitals and final shots on goal were 47 – 35 in favour of the Caps. The Oil Caps next game is an away game, Wednesday, October 26 against Neepawa. Capitals Take Down Flyers

October 9,2016 Virden, MB – Oil Caps continue on their winnings ways after beating Winkler Flyers tonight, 3-0.  Marc Audet earned his second win as an Oil Cap and his first shutout in tonight’s game. The first period was a lot of back and forth action with neither team able to get one on the board. Shots on goal after the first period were 12-10 in favour of the Caps. The Oil Caps put one up on the board first at 9:57 in the second period. The powerplay goal was scored by #22 Mack Hardy assisted by #12 Tyler Kirkup and #20 Ben Dalke.  The third period the Caps capitalized at 5:00 minutes – goal was scored by #9 Sam Shultz for his first of the season assisted by #8 Tristen Cross, 2-0 Caps. The Caps finished the game off with an empty net goal scored by #24 Dlyan Cusmano at 19:58 in the third period to earn their fifth win of the season, beating Flyers 3-0. Final shots on goal were 40 – 36 in favour of the Caps. The Caps record is 5-2-1 and currently sit in third place in the league with 11 points close behind the first place team- Pistons that have 14 points.
